Via Arabische bemiddeling bereikte het Europa, waar het al in de 17e eeuw bekend was en geteeld werd in het Middellandse Zeegebied en op het Balkanschiereiland. Vroeger vermeden mensen het eten van aubergine omdat ze geloofden dat het geestelijke stoornissen en lepra zou veroorzaken. Sinds de 20e eeuw weten we dat het niet alleen niet schadelijk is, maar ook zeer heilzaam kan zijn. Het wordt nog steeds voornamelijk geconsumeerd in India en het Verre Oosten. Turkije alleen al produceert meer dan alle andere Europese landen samen.
