Cocoa swirl buns are a sweet pastry that is usually made from puff pastry, but homemade dough is also typical. The dough is rolled up in the shape of a snail, then cocoa or chocolate cream is spread in between. Powdered sugar is usually sprinkled on top for decoration. Other related pastries are walnut swirl buns, hazelnut swirl buns and pizza swirl buns, all of which are a variation on the original pastry.
Ingredients:
550 g all-purpose flour
3 tbsp of sugar
1 tsp of dry yeast
1 egg
1 cup of milk
150 g butter
3 tbsp of dark cocoa powder
2 tbsp of powdered sugar
salt
Steps:
Mix the flour with sugar, and yeast.
Add an egg, the lukewarm milk, the melted butter and a pinch of salt. Knead into a homogeneous, smooth dough. Cover and leave to rise until double in size (approx. 1 hour).
Roll out the dough to a thickness of about 1 cm.
Brush the surface of the dough with melted butter and sprinkle with the mixture of cocoa and powdered sugar. Finally, squirt the surface with melted butter.
Roll up the dough tightly and cut into 2-3 cm thick slices. Place on a baking tray lined with baking paper and flatten the rolls slightly. leave to rise for 20 minutes.
Brush the rolls with milk and bake in a preheated oven at 180°C for 20 minutes.
Leave to cool slightly, sprinkle with powdered sugar and enjoy!
